Women’s Council is a political, social and cultural includes all women’s organizations

The Women’s Council of North and East Syria is a political, social and cultural rights cornerstone that includes all women’s organizations in political parties. It aims at preserving women’s and peoples’ gains in the north and east of Syria.

Women in the north and east of Syria have organized and engaged in all spheres of life, realizing great steps through the participation of women in the north and east of Syria in political activity and opening the way for the joint presidency system and the equality of men in the councils and the development of the justice system that resulted in the creation of women’s laws which are the most important achievements made by women during these years.

In order to protect these gains achieved by women during the revolution of Rojava, it was necessary to form a council under one roof. This task was carried out by Kongra Star after five months of discussions and the approval of women’s organizations, political parties, independent personalities and women’s institutions in Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria to hold the Founding Conference of Women’s Council in North and East Syria.

Structure of internal council and organization

The Women’s Council of North and East Syria is a political, social and cultural rights umbrella, which includes all women’s organizations, in political parties, representatives of councils and civil society organizations interested in women’s issues and independent women’s figures.

The council expresses the organized will of women in northern and eastern Syria, discusses and approves issues affecting women, and also enables women to participate in decision-making centers on issues of critical importance to society in general and coordinates with the administration stakeholders in North and East Syria.

Basic principles of the Council

During the discussions among the participants in the conference, the basic principles of the council were recognized, including the achievement of equality and free and equal life, and the rejection of all forms of national, religious discrimination, as well as the rejection of all forms of violence against women based on resolution 1820 of the United Nations Security Council in 2008, and to ensure the protection and full care of women and children from the affected groups on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 of 2000.

Objectives of the Council

The aim of the Council is to preserve women’s and peoples’ gains in the north and east of Syria, to consolidate and develop women’s law and to ensure its application in all regions of northern and eastern Syria; to organize women in North and East Syria in particular and other Syrian regions in general; empower women and develop self-defense mechanisms.

In addition to working to achieve joint working mechanisms with Syrian women in other regions, and to involve women at a high rate in the negotiating process and the Syrian Constitution Writing Committee, guaranteeing their rights in all aspects, effective participation in decision-making on women in particular and community issues in general.

The council focuses on intensifying the efforts to liberate Afrin and ending the oppression of women in Afrin by the Turkish occupation forces and mercenaries, and working to establish and strengthen relations with regional and international organizations for women to exchange experiences and achieve joint action between the councils and these organizations.

The Council will hold its conference one time every year

The council will be held in accordance with the resolutions issued by the conference, once every year, in which the Council’s Coordination will be elected composed of 17 members, taking into account the adequate representation of women of all components and regions. The Council will hold its regular meetings every two months.

The council also supervises the implementation of the decisions taken by the council, organizes and manages meetings of the council, coordinates with the concerned authorities in north and east Syria administration, and develops relations with regional and international organizations for women.
