Statement for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Statement to public opinion

On behalf of Kongra Star and ahead of the occasion of 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we start by recalling the three Mirabel sisters assassinated by dictator Rafael Trujillo because they objected to his tyrannical regime. We recall all the martyrs who charted the map of freedom with their own blood and became the symbols of resistance against the reactionary authoritarian mentalities which are based on breaking the will of women and denying their identity. We recall the women martyrs such as Zilan, Beritan, Sakine and Barin.

Throughout history and until today, the patriarchal mentality has not only enslaved women, but also marginalized them and excluded them from most spheres of life. In fact, the entire society has been excluded and turned into a tool that serves to fulfil the ambitions and strengthen the authority of those who are in power. The Syrian war represents a culmination of violence against women and society that reached its limits, especially in recent years. The war broke out due to nationalism and sectarianism and it brought lot of suffering, while the Syrian society have witnessed all kinds of violence from killing and destruction till displacement and migration. Of course, the biggest burden of this war was put on women shoulders, the toll on them was particularly brutal, and all of this while still having to face obsolete customs and traditions that have restrained their freedom for thousands of years.

The Syrian woman have suffered a lot from the ISIS terrorist organization, which brought the return of the age of slavery, but it was also Syrian women who didn’t gave up but have fought and organized themselves. They developed themselves through political and economic education but also in the field of self-defense. The Women’s Defense Units (YPJ) have played enormous role in the expulsion of the nightmare called ISIS from the territory of northern Syria and reduced the danger that it poses to the whole world, liberating alongside thousands of children and women from the grip of terrorist supporters and complices. A good example of women who impersonates this struggle is the martyr Arin Mirkan. Her deeds had a great impact on the people all over the world and the 21st century is already being marked by the strong personalities of women who resist, such an as her. In that same way in which the action of Arin Mirkan caused that the voice of the Kobani resistance reached to the conscience of the world, the heroic guerrilla action of Avesta Xabur created fear and terror in the hearts of the murderer Erdogan and his mercenary allies, responsible for the killing and forced displacement of thousands of Afrin’s residents who until now are obliged to stay in refugee camps, suffering poor living conditions. And while the international public opinion remains silent, those who have stayed in the Afrin province are on daily basis exposed to various types of physical, psychological and sexual violence. The aim is to annihilate the project of the democratic nation (based on developing a free women and a democratic society found on justice and equality). We as Kongra Star consider all these immoral and inhuman practices as violence itself. If we want to address the issue of violence, we must reduce all these aspects that bring woes upon societies, while serving the ruling forces to fulfil their ambitions. We must get the international community to open its eyes in front of these massacres and crimes against humanity and put an end to violence against women and society.

We call all women in the world to organize themselves and intensify the struggle to liberate themselves and their societies from the grip of slavery imposed by patriarchal mentalities and to take a firm stand against any aggression or occupation that threatens our territories. With the will of woman, we can smash occupation.

US must withdraw decision on PKK leaders

Kongreya Star released a statement in response to the US decision to put a bounty on Cemil Bayık, Murat Karayılan and Duran Kalkan.

The women’s movement said it was known by everyone that the Turkish state has first established DAESH and then supported it, as it is likewise also behind terrorist groups such al-Qaeda. Kongreya Star said the Kurdish people are under continuous attack and massacre by the Turkish state that supports and feeds these terrorist groups.

Calling on Kurdish people to take action against the massacres and attacks carried out by Turkey, Kongreya Star said: “The attacks carried out by the invading Turkish state against the Kurdish people demanding peace and democracy are known”, the statement said, adding: “This reality was once again proved by the occupation attacks in Afrin”.

Referring to the statement made by U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Matthew Palmer on the bounty on the PKK leaders, Kongreya Star said: “These three revolutionary leaders of the freedom movement have been fighting for humanity’s freedom for 40 years”.

Kongreya Star added: “These three leaders have a major role in the struggle for freedom. The Kurdish liberation movement, which has been fighting under the leadership of the PKK, and the Kurdish people will never leave these revolutionaries alone. Cemil Bayık, Murat Karayılan and Duran Kalkan are the vanguard of the Kurdish people”.

The Kurdish liberation movement played a historical role in the liberation of Shengal and Kobanê, reminded the statement. “They protected thousands of people, including women, from DAESH terror. Thousands of women are taking part in the struggle for the freedom of Kurdistan and are leading the women’s liberation struggle”.

Kongreya Star said: “The US must abandon its anti-Kurdish policy and immediately fulfill its responsibility in the search for a solution. As Kongreya Star, we call upon Kurdish women to turn their struggle in a permanent one. The decision taken by the US increases the anger of the Kurdish people. Once again we would like to point out that the US should give up this cheap politics and must immediately review this decision and withdraw it”.

Nov 1 Kobanê Solidarity Message

The first day of November marks the international day of solidarity with Kobanê, a historic day that drew the whole world’s attention to the fortress of resistance. It wasn’t only the World Kobanê Day but the day that the Kurdish people united wholeheartedly and Kobanê became a symbol of brotherhood and world peace. Where Kobanê was crowned as the capitol of world peace. The Kobanê resistance lasted forty-nine days and continued for more than two years. From there emerged the legendary stand of the Kurdish fighters despite the differences in numbers and equipment between them and the mercenaries of the Islamic State (ISIS).
The city was surrounded on three sides and placed in the range of heavy fire. The worst terrorist and inhumane practices were carried out against them; killing the elderly, women and children in order to empty the area of its people. The north remained at the mercy of the Turkish occupation which mobilized its forces on the border to face the repercussions of the displacement of tens of thousands of Kobanê’s residents in search of security and protection. Despite all this, the Kurds didn’t surrender and defended their land with all their capabilities to fight the terrorist organizations represented by ISIS and fought side by side with the units of YPG. The resistance was successful after the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs in defense of life and freedom of the community. Martyrs and thousands of wounded have provided the highest legend known to history when they confronted the terrorist groups with their solid mentality and they gained the respect of the whole world.
Kobanê’s resistance is not only a military victory but it’s also a victory of peace against the war of terrorism and victory of resistance against authoritarian domination. It seems that the past years of violence and terrorism haven’t satisfied the Turkish repression machine which has been hostile to the Syrian people in general and the Kurds in particular. It is Turkey once again targeting the liberated and secure areas of Afrin with the help of its mercenaries from Al -Nusra Front and ISIL who use heavy and internationally prohibited weapons against innocent civilians, women, the elderly, and children. Even the trees and stones haven’t been spared from their barbarity. They destroyed the infrastructure in Afrin such as schools, hospitals, places of worship, public institutions and monuments.
Turkey and it’s mercenaries have raped and killed women, replaced the indigenous people from their homes and settlements with strangers who came from Al-Ghouta and given them homes. The people of Afrin and YPG forces resisted the Turkish army with unprecedented heroic resistance for 58 days with very limited capabilities against their heavy and sophisticated weapons. The resistance continues through special heroic operations which target Turkish mercenaries and terrorist factions. This resistance was a test for all Northern Syria and it’s people: Arabs Kurds, Assyrian and others. Women in Northern Syria played a leading role in the resistance, while women from all people around the world have joined hands in solidarity.
Yes, Afrin has been conquered but it will not fall and will remain a thorn in the side of terrorism. We have defended of the people of Northern Syria and liberated the regions from the scourge of terrorism, and so will we liberate Afrin and all the areas occupied by Turkey. We condemn and deplore the barbaric acts of this brutal aggression against the regions of Northern Syria appeal to all international and human rights organizations not to stand idly by while the massacres of Erdogan take place under his policy of terrorism toward the Kurdish people. We also call for the dispatch of special committees to investigate violations by Turkey and it’s mercenaries against Afrin and neighboring cities.
We strongly condemn the barbaric Turkish attacks in the areas of and the villages of Kobanê. We join our voices with the young womens’ movement by denouncing these blatant attacks on the area of Northeast Syria.
Women Rise up for Afrin!
Glory and eternity to our martyrs and shame to the enemies of the Kurdish people.
